A mashup night of harsh noise and primitive 8 bit (utopian) video games! Hacking into the evening is Tucson’s twisted techno treasure Matt Rios navigating hardware game glitches. The feature act is an epic re-appropriation of 1984’s Kings Quest videogame through the sonic noise of Eric Schlappi, Anthony Sanchez, David Sherman and the all-consuming noise progenitor magus NOT BREATHING (David Wright) and visuals by Falcotronik!!
It’s been called nauseating, shocking, depraved, pornographic . . . it’s also a masterpiece! Tucson electronic muse Sunfucked accompanies the Pier Paolo Pasolini’s final film, Salò. Set in 1944 Fascist Italy, this transposition of the Marquis de Sade’s eighteenth-century opus of torture and degradation in 1944’s fascist Italy remains one of the most passionately debated films of all time, a thought-provoking inquiry into the political, social, and sexual dynamics that define the world we live in. Opening the show is Luther Price’s 15 minute Super-8 masterpiece Sodom (1989), a brutal assemblage of gay porn footage, dumpster dived from behind buildings in Boston’s Combat Zone. Not only does Price mash up scenes of hardcore sex with footage from biblical films and shots of flames, he also punches holes in the film strip, taping shots of heads or penises back into them and drawing more attention to the surface, the materiality of the film itself. As film critic J. Hoberman put it succinctly, Sodom “could be the illumination of Jerry Falwell’s unconscious.”
Valerie Kuehne and the Wasps Nests is a band based in New York and Pittsburgh. Valerie leads the group on vocals and cello, Jeffrey Young plays violin, and Alex Cohen plays drums. In performance, they mix grindcore, cabaret, performance art, punk, and neoclassical art song, with a dash of free improvisation. Lucid Culture said that Valerie Kuehne is “part punk classical cellist, part performance artist, but her performance art isn’t the foofy, mannered kind – it’s old school 80s style and it has fangs. And it’s hilarious.” Shakefist Magazine called her “a fearless cello master with a relentlessly creative soul.” Her work in this project and others operates under principles of surprise and investigates obsession, comedy, decay, forensic pathology, sex, hypnogogia, viscera, spirituality, and death.

Are you familiar with Ralph’s music? Ralph was in a cow-punk band in Austin in the 1990s called The Bad Livers and now plays solo music that’s equally influenced by Appalachia and West African folksongs. He switches effortlessly between banjo, kalimba, fiddle, and accordion and his songs have an earthy psychedelic quality to them.
He’s played with Michael Hurley, Jandek, and Thurston Moore.

Cherry Art Editions release party featuring a limited postcard and CD set and performance by legendary local artist and musician Al Perry, memory card game limited editions by Servane Mary of New York City and Nina Ott of Milwaukee, and a book of writings by Bryan Price, of Los Angeles. Elizabeth Cherry is a known cult figure in the Tucson art scene. Her past credits include Elizabeth Cherry Gallery, where she featured world-renowned conceptual artists.
Since the early 1960s, Tony Conrad’s films and compositions have been the stuff of legend. His development and practice of Just Intonation and Minimalism through his work with Stockhausen and La Monte Young and his pivotal role in the formation of The Velvet Underground has been incredibly influential. Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present by Tyler Hubby examines the pioneering life and works of this amazing artist, musician, activist and educator. Opening the show will be Glenn Weyant conducting “TONY BECOMES A BUDDHA”. Weyant’s original score is built upon sound ideas and philosophical ruminations put forth by Tony Conrad for an orchestra of amplified bowed guitars, cellos, violins, violas . These include but are not limited to: just intonation, 60-cycle amplifier ground hum tuning, improvisation, drone, noise, piezo amplification, harmonics and slavish Pythagorean demagoguery deconstruction. Orchestra is: Glenn Weyant, Samantha Bounkeua, Robert Villa, Sophie Gibson-Rush, Adam Cooper-Terán, Nik Rayne, Grant Beyschau, Connor Gallaher, Richard Young, John Melillo, Miguel Urbina, Jake Sorgen and Vicki Brown!!
An evening of electro-acoustic innovations featuring Minnesota’s mad genius Tim Kaiser! Kaiser is a sonic inventor exerting prowess over his hand-crafted instruments. A rig of Frankenstein objects creates a wall of sound, reacting to light, the flip of a switch, a shifted knob or the plucking of a steel rod. Growing out of this array are audible undulations, sheets of reverb and unknown timbre– all mutable, amorphous and evolving. Kaiser’s tableau of instruments resemble a scientific laboratory, a steampunk console, entertaining our imagination and questioning our definition of music. Joining Kaiser are Fawn Bones, Skincage and Igloo Martian!!
The oldest surviving animated feature film and based upon based on the ancient stories “The Arabian Nights.”The Ådventures of Prince Åchmed is a 1926 German animated fairytale feature film by Lotte Reiniger. A handsome prince with a flying horse befriends a witch, meets Aladdin, and battles demons to win a princess. The film features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented; the technique she used for the camera is similar to Wayang shadow puppets, though hers were animated frame by frame, not manipulated in live action.Micheal Henderson, Margaret McClelland, Stefanos Kokranis, Jillian LaCrux, and Kyle Bert join Scott Kerr in accompanying this marvelous film!
Seven brilliant and controversial women filmmakers were invited to direct for this the 1986 omnibus, Seven Women, Seven Sins: Helke Sander (Gluttony), Bette Gordon (Greed), Maxi Cohen (Anger), Chantal Akerman (Sloth), Valie Export (Lust), Laurence Gavron (Envy), and Ulrike Ottinger (Pride). Each filmmaker had the opportunity of choosing a sin to interpret as they wished. The final film reflected this diversity, including traditional narrative fiction, experimental video, musicals, and radical documentary. Opening the show, Burning Palms breathes haunting new life into Mary Pickford’s 1910 silent film What the Daisy Said with a live score commissioned by the Mary Pickford Foundation.
EV opens our 4th year of experimental film and music programming with a performance by San Francisco based Douglas Katelus who is touring with his films and a 1960’s Hammond A100 Organ and a Leslie speaker! He will be screening his 16mm film & slide piece Keep Film Dead along with his take on Pink Floyd’s “Atom Heart Mother”. Electric wizard Eric Schlappi will play live to PsycMAP’s music video of his epic Poseidonis. Local ambient trailblazer (& Chick Magnet founder!) LANO teams up with Gabriella Molina presenting delights of sound & light!!
