EXPLODED VIEW FUNDRAISER, HAPPENING & feast!!!

12empire1  12empire4050 12empire 12andy-300x221

Co-presented by Olivier Mosset ($10 students)  7pm- 3am

“The best, most temporal way of making a building that I ever heard of is by making it with light. The Fascists did a lot of this “light architecture.”  If you build buildings with lights outside, you can make them indefinite, and then when you’re through using them

you shut the lights off and they disappear.”

-Andy Warhol (1975)

A feast for all senses, EV invites you to our polyphonic living installation of film, music and multiple multi-channeled mayhem. The Exploded View gallery will be transformed into giant mirrored chamber within which will be projected Andy Warhol’s 1964 silent 8 hour/10 reel film masterpiece EMPIRE. This come-and-go event is a first time fundraiser for Exploded View, as we enter our 5th year, to stay strong in our mission of cultivating film, music and provocation!

KENNETH ANGER REDUX!

I Will Be Called Lucifer (Filmmaker, Anthony Buchanan in person)

Through a searing mixture of myth, biography, docu-fable, collage and fantasy, Anthony Buchanan’s essay film is an homage to Kenneth Anger, to creative rebels and to the great poets of Hollywood. It’s a love letter from a younger filmmaker to a mentor converging the many lives of Lucifer with the story of filmmaker Kenneth Anger’s troubled production of LUCIFER RISING. Robert Oppenheimer, JFK, Charles Manson, Dennis Hopper, Marilyn Monroe, Bobby Beausoleil and others surface in an experimental film which explores the consequences of seeking truth in archetypal narratives.

He’ll also play a short piece for speaking violinist and retuned violin by Paul Pinto, a fellow member of New York’s thingNY composer-performer collective.

Films & Poetry of Ira Cohen

EV Associate Curator, Carl Hanni guides us through the life and work of poet, photographer, filmmaker, publisher and legendary shaman/bohemian Ira Cohen. Ira Cohen lived and created a singular body of work in New York City, Tangier and Katmandu from the 1960s until his death in 2011. His contemporaries included William S. Burroughs, Angus MacLise (Velvet Underground), Gerard Malanga, Charles Henri Ford and Paul Bowles. EV will screen Cohen’s transcendent The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda and Kings With Straw Mats. In Kings With Straw Mats, Ira Cohen is both participant and observer to an extraordinary parade of people on pilgrimage into the heart of one of India’s greatest sacred celebrations, the Kumbh Mela. With the eye of a filmmaker and the voice of a poet, Cohen introduces an array of holy men as they gather for the event, which occurs only once every 12 years.

SK8 OR DIE VIDEOS + Paranoid Park

Jocko Weiland presents a selection of rad skateboarding videos with a live improv-accompaniment by shredder JLownsbury & friends. Tonight’s second act is Gus Van Sant’s underappreciated skater feature, Paranoid Park. In this film, an unsolved murder at Portland’s infamous Paranoid Park skate park brings detectives to a local high school, propelling a young skater into a moral odyssey where he must not only deal with the pain and disconnect of adolescence but the consequences of his own actions. One of the most darkly intense films of Gus Van Sant’s fascinating career.
