{EXTREME SOUTHERN CULTURE part 4} Benjamin Smoke

*Carls’ Cine Club

Benjamin Smoke: filmed over ten years and released in 2000, Jem Cohen and Peter Sillen’s film documents the tortured life and career of the Atlanta based musician Robert Dickerson, aka Benjamin Smoke. Dickerson was a drug addicted, HIV positive gay misfit who died in 1991, and who fronted several local underground bands, including Smoke and the Opal Foxx Quartet. Filmed largely in and around the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Atlanta, the film profiles an artist who literally gave it all for his art.

FRI 2/14 Opening with film show

SAT 2/15 +SUN 2/16 12-5 Gallery show continues

World renowned fetish photographer Eric Kroll presents the fantastically obsessive 1960’s NYC photo archive of “Arthur” an unknown artist- who incessantly made and collected 8mm. films and photos of women with long HAIR! Come see EV transformed into a floor to ceiling salon of Arthur’s incredible photographs and collages! Writes Kroll, “Proof of Arthur’s intense obsession for women’s hair is in the hours of 8mm Kodachrome home movies he made of unsuspecting young women milling about Washington Square Park and the beach at Coney Island. Or the hours and hours he spent cutting up and preserving newspaper, magazine and comic images of damsels with long hair or his extensive collection of rare 1950s “Stan’s Photos” of women with hair down to the ground!” Thy Odd Birds will create an original jazz score for a reel of Arthur’s 8mm. footage.

NYC UNDERGROUND part 3: WILD COMBINATION: A PORTRAIT OF ARTHUR RUSSELL

(*Carl’s Cine Club)
Matt Wolf’s 2008 documentary Wild Combination tells the remarkable, improbable story of Arthur Russell, an Iowa transplant to New York City in the early 1970s who became a downtown fixture as a musician, artist and producer of early disco records. Arthur’s story is also the story of creating art under duress in the fertile, but also desperate milieu of downtown New York in the 70s and 80s. With remembrances by his collaborators Philip Glass, Allen Ginsberg, David Toop and others.
