(Vancouver filmmaker Ryder Thomas White in person)

Engaging DIY aesthetics and politics, Iris Film Collective presents eight of their new hand-processed b&w 16mm films with a collective theme addressing “the end of the world”. Iris writes, “… the sea levels rise, the magnetic poles switch, we face the mortality of ourselves and those we love and question ideas of identity, representation and time itself.” This unique program pushes the technical limits of motion picture film, imagination and collaboration.

IFC is a Vancouver-based group of independent artists creating, exhibiting and touring film-based works with the goal of increasing the visibility and accessibility of experimental media art. Above all, our interest in ciné film—actual celluloid—at a time when this medium is shifting to a post-industry model, is of key interest in all our pursuits.

INDUSTRIAL FILMS // INDUSTRIAL MUSIC

It’s Dead Technology Night!

A celebration of media machines of times past! Witness the analog & mechanical sound musings of Igloo Martian, Purity of Essence, Jonathan Ray, Prabjit Virdee, Eric Schlappi , and Wyatt Schaffner each accompanying a mystery 16mm film. EV has provided each musician with merely the title and length of a “non-art” film… come marvel as they respond in real time before your very eyes & ears! The films are drawn from discarded educational and industrials archive at EV and span the gamut of esoteric and practical themes. An event of HEAVY synesthesia not to be missed!!

ROGER BEEBE: Films for One to Eight Projectors

(Filmmaker in Person)
Best known perhaps for his multiple-projector performances, filmmaker/curator/professor Roger Beebe returns to the road in January 2015 for a four-month tour that takes him to three corners of North America including his first visit to Tucson! While this tour does feature several of his best-known projector performances (including the six-projector show-stopping space jam “Last Light of a Dying Star”), it places those works in the context of a broader practice of appropriation of educational/industrial/mass cultural imagery. These works cover a range of topics from black athletes with Irish surnames (“Famous Irish Americans”) and the secret logic of the book of Genesis (“Beginnings”) to Las Vegas suicides (“Money Changes Everything”) and companies jockeying to be at the start of the phone book (“AAAAA Motion Picture”). The program also includes his most recent video, “Historia Calamitatum (The Story of My Misfortunes), Part II: The Crying Game,” (award winner at a number of festivals including Chicago Underground, IC Docs, and Milwaukee Underground), which explores the forbidden pleasures of male tears.
