DVA (Czech Republic) + SHOODA SHOOK IT + surrealist animation

06 dva2 06 shooda_shook_it_tucson

An evening of art-pop music and darkly twisted visions, featuring Czech pop pranksters DVA, Tucson’s freaky fun disco-funksters Shooda Shook It, and uncanny animation. DVA an energetic two-piece duo specializing in a warped pop mishmash that incorporates outré instrumentation, plenty of studio effects, and lyrics culled from their own made-up language. DVA is also known for their animated music films and tonight we will screen some phantasmagorical classics of stop-motion animation from Jan Švankmajer and the Brothers Quay.

EASTER SCREECH!!!! : Rock My Religion + The Myrrors

Dan Graham’s Rock My Religion (1982–84) is a video essay populated with both punk/rock performers (Patti Smith, Jim Morrison, Black Flag and Glenn Branca) and historical figures (including Ann Lee, founder of The Shakers). This fusion of voice-over, singing, shouting, jarring sounds & text overlaid onto shaky, gritty images proposes a historical genealogy of rock music and an ambitious thesis on the origins of America. Tucson’s psych prophets The Myrrors initiate the evening’s sonic resurrection as only they can!

ECSTATIC DAYS / ABJECT NIGHTS Simon Donovan & George Kuchar

(Artist in Person)

Tonight we are proud to present the video work of Simon Donovan, one of Tucson’s most acclaimed (and modest) artists alongside the filmwork of George Kuchar, the late, great & wild master who influenced both Andy Warhol & John Waters. Simon will present a selection of his own ironic, touching & often comedic single channel video works. Kuchar is considered the father of the video diary as well as Hollywood camp send-ups dating back to his 8mm teenage films in the 1960’s and tonight we will follow Donovan’s work with a salacious selection of his best works!!

BJORK’S BIOPHILIA LIVE

Friday, November 7

 BJORK’S BIOPHILIA LIVE Exclusive Event

$10 admission (no reservations….line up early…only 40 available seats!)

Exploded View is one of several hundred art spaces around the world (Sarajevo, Prague, Tokyo, Warsaw and Istanbul etc…) that have been chosen to premiere Bjork’s astonishing new multimedia concert film, BIOPHILIA LIVE. Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland’s film captures the human element of Björk’s multi-disciplinary multimedia project: Biophilia. Recorded live at Björk’s show at London’s Alexandra Palace in 2013, the film features Björk and her band performing every song on Biophilia and more using a broad variety of instruments – some digital, some traditional and some completely unclassifiable. The film has already been hailed as a captivating record of an artist in full command of her idiosyncratic powers. “There are not many artists who can combine the lifecycle of a jellyfish with a breakbeat and make it work. But this is an extraordinary piece, perhaps more an opera, where Björk and drummer Manu Delago are at their virtuosic best. It’s utterly bonkers yet moving – especially a strange love song set to a mutating virus. “
