The Exploded View Invitational Altered Album Cover Show

(free)

Whether iconic or obscure, wild or laid back, we respond to the art of record album covers in deeply personal ways. Here, in Tucson, vinyl is omnipresent and alive in record swaps, fairs, thrift stores, yard sales and living rooms. EV has invited over 20 artists, dj’s, musicians and collagists to respond to the challenge of altering (re-invented through any desired medium or means) one album cover as a 12.25” x 12.25” canvas for their own imagination. Participants include Tom Walbank, Boyd and Lesli Peterson, Fish Karma, Al Perry, Nika Kaiser, Kidd Squid, Eric Kroll, Carl Hanni, Nick Georgiou, Wesley Fawcett Creigh, Clif Taylor, Carrie Vonier, Bill Mackey, Beth Weinstein, Igloo Martian, Andy Burgess, R. Pinpole, Debra Gregerman, Melissa Mauzy and more. Join us at the opening for an unveiling of re-configured cover-art as well as a spinning of chosen LP’s!

¡TEENAGE WASTELAND!

SAT 4/11 (free!)

Tisch Abelow (NYC) and Wesley Fawcett Creigh (Tucson) pay a surreal homage to their teenage years with an experimental documentary film comprised of footage taken 12 years earlier during their senior year of high school. In the fall of 2013, Tisch revisited this footage and pared it down into a short film, mostly starring Wesley’s father, which she calls, “a musing on the mundane.” In addition, there will be a collaborative 2-D artwork spanning the course of their friendship reflecting on the nihilistic and absurd tendencies of youth. Please join us as we “come of age” with cake and local DJ’s.

INDUSTRIAL FILMS // INDUSTRIAL MUSIC

It’s Dead Technology Night!

A celebration of media machines of times past! Witness the analog & mechanical sound musings of Igloo Martian, Purity of Essence, Jonathan Ray, Prabjit Virdee, Eric Schlappi , and Wyatt Schaffner each accompanying a mystery 16mm film. EV has provided each musician with merely the title and length of a “non-art” film… come marvel as they respond in real time before your very eyes & ears! The films are drawn from discarded educational and industrials archive at EV and span the gamut of esoteric and practical themes. An event of HEAVY synesthesia not to be missed!!

ECSTATIC DAYS / ABJECT NIGHTS Simon Donovan & George Kuchar

(Artist in Person)

Tonight we are proud to present the video work of Simon Donovan, one of Tucson’s most acclaimed (and modest) artists alongside the filmwork of George Kuchar, the late, great & wild master who influenced both Andy Warhol & John Waters. Simon will present a selection of his own ironic, touching & often comedic single channel video works. Kuchar is considered the father of the video diary as well as Hollywood camp send-ups dating back to his 8mm teenage films in the 1960’s and tonight we will follow Donovan’s work with a salacious selection of his best works!!

EXTREME JAPANESE TRANSGRESSION & FURRY FREAKOUTS! Shūji Terayama’s Emperor Tomato Ketchup & Buppoosh

Wednesday, November 12

18-ETK 18-shujiterayamaphoto 18-eview_Terayama-594x407 18-emptomatkat

One of Terayama’s most challenging works, Emperor Tomato Ketchupis ostensibly about a young boy who is the emperor of a country in which children have overthrown the adults. This underground masterpiece startlingly attacks the taboo subjects of adolescent sexuality as well as the tyranny of both church and state. Lacking a conventional narrative, the film’s gritty, often over-exposed imagery at times resembles a home movie gone horribly wrong. Set in a dystopian Japan, its revolutionary gaze is as much sexual as it is political. Equal parts anarchy and poetry, Emperor Tomato Ketchup is Terayama using the cinematic canvas to create a work that is revolutionary in both form and spirit. Opening the show is Tucson’s own band of mysteriously costumed furry ambient aberrancy, Buppoosh!!

Bill Mackey’s REGRET AND RATIONALIZATION

Art Installation Opening

Regret and Rationalization is a piece that uses sound, text, drawing, photography, and video to explore and portray the human aptitude to regret and rationalize at the individual and community level. Individually, we process this loop of regret and rationalization as we travel through the landscape (what else is there to do as we drive our cars, ride our bicycles, or take the trolley?). Collectively, the stories, policies and the subsequent built environment are supported by a public process of regret and rationalization.

Bill Mackey is the principal at Worker, Inc., a company that specializes in the production of architecture, exhibits, pamphlets, books, artworks and other ephemera. His main objective is to explore the psychological, cultural, physical, and political connections humans have to the physical landscape.

Wed 11/5
LO-FI FILM FESTIVAL with opening set by Prabjit Virdee

The Lo-Fi Film Festival, which is produced by Basement Media (Chicago), is a survey of contemporary artists working with low definition, low technology, and low fidelity motion picture techniques. LFFF is a celebration of the signal to noise ratio that underlies all media- of #fuzzy, #glitchy, + #grimy. Expect a fantastic opening set by local musical polymath Prabjit Virdee (Mute Swan, Union Pacific) setting the stage for a scratchy evening of lo-fi sonic & visual kulture!
