We are thrilled to host Barbara Hammer who is perhaps the greatest and most prolific living “first generation” lesbian experimental filmmaker. Uncompromising and innovative,  a visual artist working primarily in film and video, Barbara Hammer has made over 80 moving image works in a career that spans 40 years. Tonight we will screen a program of Hammer’s films that sample her trailblazing political and aesthetic practice from the 1970’s to the present. Films will include Dyketactics, No No Nooky TV, Sanctus, Maya Deren’s Sink and more.

A fascinating new documentary on the life and career of Yvonne Rainer, Feelings Are Facts tells the captivating story of one of America’s most radical and important artists. In 1962, as a founding member of Judson Dance Theater, Rainer revolutionized modern dance by introducing everyday movements like walking and running into the dance lexicon. Abandoning choreography in the ‘70s, Rainer introduced narrative techniques into American avant-garde film, turning that genre on its head, too. In the film, we follow Rainer, now 81 and returned to choreography, as she continues to create vibrant, courageous, unpredictable dances that invite audiences to question basic assumptions about art and performance.

EV’S 3rd Spring season opens with a deviant BANG, pairing two of the decadent 90’s most unsettling sexual provocateurs Matthew Barney & Luther Price. In their own distinct and deranged filmworlds, hyper/poly/queer sexuality is re-imagined in relation to fetishized MACHINES. Shot on the Isle of Man, Cremaster 4, the first film in the epic Cremaster Cycle, is Barney’s mythic motorcycle racing, adrenalized allegory featuring Barney as the dandyish tapsuited Satyr. Boston filmmaker Luther Price’s Me Gut No Dog Dog (1995), is a queer libido-driven obsessive found-footage dirge which must be seen to be believed! The film features a military training film, a 1970’s U of A student production of an action Kung-Fu film shot on the U of A Campus, circle jerks, anonymous businessmen, a motorized dildo machine, and modernist architecture! Never before screened on this dry coast, Price is one of the most brilliant underground film artists of our time.

Before Internet dating and hookup apps, The Handkerchief code was largely used by gay men in the 1970’s to distinguish sexual preferences and fetishes in gay clubs and on the streets of places like San Francisco and New York. In Hanky Code: The Movie, Periwinkle Cinema, San Francisco’s queer experimental film collective brings Queer and Trans filmmakers across a spectrum of genres, styles, genders, and locations to dissect the code in this epic anthology feature comprised of 25 short films! Each filmmaker or filmmaking team tells a story of a different color/fetish of the code. Films range from narrative to experimental to erotic and animated, with many films redefining the traditional code with colors, patterns, and fetishes up to creative interpretation of the artist.

EV is proud to present the Tucson premiere of Marjorie Sturm’s new feature documentary about the scandalous writer JT LeRoy. JT LeRoy was a teen prostitute, addicted to heroin and infected with HIV, when a therapist encouraged him to write his life story. Buoyed by a cadre of celebrities, he published three critically acclaimed books, including Sarah and The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things. But as his fame skyrocketed, the shocking truth emerged: JT was not what he seemed. What followed was a downfall as bewildering as it was tragic. Drawn into LeRoy’s inner circle before the truth came to light, filmmaker Marjorie Sturm was misled like many others. Through intimate interviews with many close to the tarnished figure, Sturm attempts to untangle what really happened, and in the process explores how his deception called into question not only the value of LeRoy’s writing without his “authenticity”, but our culture’s complicity with the author’s seductive cult of personality.

I, Scorpio is a homo-erotic experimental narrative, set in the mid 1970’s, about a drug dealer who picks up a Mexican hitchhiker on a desert road in Arizona. Filmed and cast in Tucson, the dreamy, hypnotic I, Scorpio is the latest sun and sex-drenched film by writer-director Patrick McGuinn. Set in 1974, this film stars Coleman Kent, as Beau, the American who picks up Jesus, Christian Isaac Cruz; they drive off into the desert, do some drugs and later hole up in a motel to have sex. McGuinn uses this minimal premise as a means to explore a spiritual intersection of cinematic experimentation and the landscapes of desire. McGuinn will open the show with a selection of music and film shorts.
