Ohio based filmmaker Roger Beebe is renowned for his exquisitely syncopated 16mm multi-projector performances. The works in Beebe’s Exploded View performance represent both ends of the analogue/digital spectrum (from crafted noise to visual investigations). This evening will include:
“Lineage (for Norman McLaren)”: a 4-projector 16mm (mostly) abstract, optical-sound performance:, “Amazonia”: a “desktop cinema” essay on the ways that the virtual economy is transforming physical space and labor, plus and a sprawling meditation on natural beauty that includes Werner Herzog, a bunch of McDonald’s trash, and California’s current superbloom, “de rerum natura.”

Join us tonight for premieres of experimental works of analogue and digital cinema exploring Southwestern terrains. ENCODED / EXPLODED (2018) Is a new video work that triangulates sites of mythic power centers in the Sonoran/Tucson basin and traces visionary intersections of the cultural/technological and natural Sonoran landscape. Also screening is the psycho-dynamic 9/11 warfare of The Graceless and agitprop documentation from Psycmap Collective’s D19 Festival of Lights intervention. Opening the show is an expanded 16mm projector performance of Sherman’s homage to AZ’s letter mountains: The Silver Returns with live improvised guitar accompaniment by Roman Barten-Sherman.

A fascinating new documentary on the life and career of Yvonne Rainer, Feelings Are Facts tells the captivating story of one of America’s most radical and important artists. In 1962, as a founding member of Judson Dance Theater, Rainer revolutionized modern dance by introducing everyday movements like walking and running into the dance lexicon. Abandoning choreography in the ‘70s, Rainer introduced narrative techniques into American avant-garde film, turning that genre on its head, too. In the film, we follow Rainer, now 81 and returned to choreography, as she continues to create vibrant, courageous, unpredictable dances that invite audiences to question basic assumptions about art and performance.

EV opens our 4th year of experimental film and music programming with a performance by San Francisco based Douglas Katelus who is touring with his films and a 1960’s Hammond A100 Organ and a Leslie speaker! He will be screening his 16mm film & slide piece Help Keep Film Dead along with his take on Pink Floyd’s “Atom Heart Mother”. Electric wizard Eric Schlappi will play live to PsycMAP’s music video of his epic Poseidonis. Local ambient trailblazer (& Chick Magnet founder!) LANO teams up with Gabriella Molina presenting delights of sound & light!!

Engaging DIY aesthetics and politics, Iris Film Collective presents eight of their new hand-processed b&w 16mm films with a collective theme addressing “the end of the world”. Iris writes, “… the sea levels rise, the magnetic poles switch, we face the mortality of ourselves and those we love and question ideas of identity, representation and time itself.” This unique program pushes the technical limits of motion picture film, imagination and collaboration.

IFC is a Vancouver-based group of independent artists creating, exhibiting and touring film-based works with the goal of increasing the visibility and accessibility of experimental media art. Above all, our interest in ciné film—actual celluloid—at a time when this medium is shifting to a post-industry model, is of key interest in all our pursuits.

The artist will present their artwork in the realm of visual arts, sculpture, interdisciplinary arts, literature and playwriting.  Milta Ortiz presents a live excerpt from her docu-theater script Más, based on the banning of Mexican American studies in the Tucson Unified School District; David Sherman’s documentary film Son Blues explores the music and emerging consciousness of a young Tucson musician; Catherine Eyde explores the evolution of her paintings and drawings when she designedly invited her 8 year old daughter Aria into her art; Ben Johnson explores the ancient practice of honeybee domestication and the bond between humans and bees in an interdisciplinary work; Shloka Mangharam Ettna shares new illustrations from her mixed media children’s book Amalla Dreamypants Learns to Fly ; Adan Banuelos discusses his kinetic sculpture inspired by lowrider car culture; and based on news reports of the murders of 85 transgender people in recent years, TC Tolbert creates a series of erasure poems that examine the relationship between violence against trans people and the language used to represent them in the media.

The New Works Grant provides support to individual artists residing in Tucson and Pima County for projects that employ innovative approaches to art, while meeting the highest standards of excellence.
