Celebrated California video artist Eric Saks visits Exploded View to present videos that investigate outsider mysteries and fractured narratives that wind through the Mojave Desert. Saks’ media practice has focused on phone phreaking, media jamming, gun control, hazardous waste, underground youth lifestyle, and spirituality. Saks will screen Creosote, You Talk/I Buy and the premiere of Eidolon (featuring EV fave Bill Daniel!) and more. Local artists duo Verbo•bala (Adam Cooper-Terán & Logan Phillips) employ poetry and video in their piece Sonoran Strange: Cemamagĭ Doʼag, a work that explores the duality of  indigenous knowledge versus colonial science in a ritualistic study of Tucson’s sacred Tumamoc Hill.

From young anti-war protesters in America to the death of Che Guevara and the rise of leaders like Fidel Castro and Mao Tse-Tung, this remarkably fluid 3 hour documentary examines the rise and fall of the leftist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Rejecting textbook history, the first segment delves into the beginnings of this liberal faction, focusing on 1967, when anti-Vietnam fervor swept the USA and invigorated the political debate. In part two, the disintegration of the movement, dubbed the “new left,” is laid out. Rather than authoritative or sociological. Marker’s technique is essayistic, digressive, fleet-footed and conjunctural.

We are pleased to welcome the filmmaker Irene Lusztig (Santa Cruz) presenting her latest film, The Motherhood Archives. Archival montage, science fiction and homage to 1970s feminist filmmaking are woven together to form this haunting and lyrical essay film that excavates hidden histories of childbirth in the twentieth century. Assembling her extraordinary trove, including newly rediscovered Soviet and French childbirth material tracing the evolution of Lamaze, The Motherhood Archives inventively untangles the complex, sometimes surprising genealogies of maternal education. This extraordinary achievement illuminates our changing narratives of maternal success and failure while raising important questions about our social and historical constructions of motherhood.

A program of Albuquerque-based Bryan Konefsky’s independent cinematic projects, including selections from Konefsky’s documentary on media scholar and visionary theorist, Gene Youngblood (author of the 1970 groundbreaking Expanded Cinema). Additionally, Konefsky presents works from Albuquerque’s Basement Films and the cutting edge film festival Experiments in Cinema. For Konefsky, “un-dependent” film/video artists are the modern day equivalent of the traveling troubadour, sharing the cultural news of the day in an un-mediated, first-person form. I Will Be Called Lucifer (Filmmaker, Anthony Buchanan in person)

Through a searing mixture of myth, biography, docu-fable, collage and fantasy, Anthony Buchanan’s essay film is an homage to Kenneth Anger, to creative rebels and to the great poets of Hollywood. It’s a love letter from a younger filmmaker to a mentor converging the many lives of Lucifer with the story of filmmaker Kenneth Anger’s troubled production of LUCIFER RISING. Robert Oppenheimer, JFK, Charles Manson, Dennis Hopper, Marilyn Monroe, Bobby Beausoleil and others surface in an experimental film which explores the consequences of seeking truth in archetypal narratives.
