MAD SONIC SCIENTISTS!: Tim Kaiser + Igloo Martian + Skincage + Fawn Bones

10TimKaiser1

An evening of electro-acoustic innovations featuring Minnesota’s mad genius Tim Kaiser!  Kaiser is a sonic inventor exerting prowess over his hand-crafted instruments. A rig of Frankenstein objects creates a wall of sound, reacting to light, the flip of a switch, a shifted knob or the plucking of a steel rod. Growing out of this array are audible undulations, sheets of reverb and unknown timbre– all mutable, amorphous and evolving. Kaiser’s tableau of instruments resemble a scientific laboratory, a steampunk console, entertaining our imagination and questioning our definition of music. Joining Kaiser are Fawn Bones, Skincage and Igloo Martian!!

Degenerate Video Lounge: SEX MACHINE! Matthew Barney & Luther Price

1 cremaster-41 luther-price-utopia030

EV’S Spring opens with a deviant BANG, pairing the decadent 90’s most unsettling sexual provocateurs Matthew Barney & Luther Price. In their own distinct and deranged filmworlds, hyper/poly/queer sexuality is re-imagined in relation to fetishized MACHINES. Shot on the Isle of Man, Cremaster 4, the first film in the epic Cremaster Cycle, is Barney’s mythic motorcycle racing, polysexual adrenalized allegory featuring Barney as the dandyish tapsuited Satyr. Boston filmmaker Luther Price’s Me Gut No Dog Dog (1995), is a libido driven obsessive found-footage dirge which must be seen to be believed! The film features a military training film, a 1970’s U of A student production of an action Kung-Fu film shot on the U of A Campus, circle jerks, anonymous businessmen, a motorized dildo machine, and modernist architecture! Never before screened on this dry coast, Price is one of the most brilliant underground film artists of our time.

NAM JUNE PAIK : Unseen Paik Art from the Collection of Eric Kroll

(Photographer Eric Kroll in person)

An inventor of video art and media sculpture The Korean-American artist, Nam June Paik (1932–2006) was for a period of time in NYC, a friend and mentor to (presently Tucson-based) renowned artist / photographer, Eric Kroll.

Writes Kroll, “When I was a young man in Manhattan taking photographs of anything that moved, for myself and for anyone that would publish the images, I accidently intersected with Nam June Paik. He changed how I did what I did in photography by showing me aka teaching me, the importance of including absurdity in my work. I shot for him, worked with him, from the mid-seventies to when I moved to San Francisco in 1994. That experience unlocked the door to everything I try to do.”

This evening is a truly rare one night gallery installation of Kroll’s intimate photos of Paik in addition to original drawings, seriagraphs and sculpture. With improvised noise from electronic keyboards, The Dos Jorgs will preface and footnote a never-before-seen screening of Kroll’s video documentation of Paik at work creating an iconic video sculpture. Plus, single-channel Paik works from the EV archive.

DVA is also known for their animated music films and tonight we will screen some phantasmagorical classics of stop-motion animation from Jan Švankmajer and the Brothers Quay.
