It features great unseen film clips from the Mississippi Records archives.  Presented by Mississippi Records founder, Eric Isaacson. From recordings of the first star in the universe being born all the way to the dark ages of the 1980’s, many stories will be told.

Emma Piper-Burket’s “Two years ago Diana was living on her own in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan’s buzzing capital city. She was studying to be a flight attendant and enjoying the freedom of being independent and young in a growing city. When ISIS and war returned to Iraq she moved back to her mother’s home in Sulaymaniyah. Now her days pass quietly, mostly indoors. In the darkness of frequent power outages, Diana builds a dream city in her mind.”

Cáit Ní Síomón essay films No News from Chicago is a silent narrative shot guerrilla style in McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America. It is a document of four individuals trying to make sense of the highly codified and homogenous world of the “non-place,” when stripped bare of its function of commerce and trade.Beneath the Pavement’is a psychoanalytic study of the experience of nature within contemporary technological landscapes. The essay traces the history of an area in the south loop of Chicago from early settlement expansion to the last plot of undeveloped land within the city limits, nicknamed the “Brownlands.”

Nomadic Videomaker Emma Piper-Burket joins us with her new film , a powerful personal documentary of crisis folding in contemporary Iraq.  Piper-Burket writes, “Two years ago Diana was living on her own in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan’s buzzing capital city. Opening the evening is Tucson’s diasporic Irish media artist Cáit Ní Síomón with two recent videos drawing from her years in Chicago. Through twenty-five years of ever-active filmmaking, Brooklyn-based Lynne Sachs has developed a unique, personally expressive body of speculative documentary that is rich with empathy, placing the intimate experiences of individuals and families in the context of world events and global history. Her recent Your Day Is My Night portrays the lives of immigrants living in “shift-bed” apartments in the heart of New York City’s Chinatown, homes that are shared by multiple families and which form tightly interconnected multi-generational communities. Working in close collaboration with a group of Chinatown residents for one-and-a-half years, varied interviews and conversations gave way to an improvisatory film script resulting in a deeply moving film in which these non-actors portray themselves in intimately re-created performances of domestic life.

ETHNOGRAPHIC INNOVATORS:

Robert Gardner’s Forest of Bliss

This programs plays tribute to the recent passing of the highly influential ethnographic filmmaker, Robert Gardner. Forest of Bliss is an unsparing yet redemptive account of the poignant range of joy, religious passion and grief and that punctuates daily life in Benares, India’s most holy city. The film unfolds from one sunrise to the next without commentary, subtitles or dialogue. It is an attempt to give the viewer a wholly authentic, though greatly magnified and concentrated, sense of participation in the experiences examined by the film. Indeed, Gardner’s unique approach to documentary filmmaking places this film on the divide between ethnographic filmmaking and the more personal cinematic style whose goals are closer to literature or poetry.

Wounaan: A People of the Rainforest documents the rhythms and activities of daily life of the Wounaan, an indigenous tribe inhabiting the rainforest of the west coast of Colombia during the mid-sixties. The activities of a constructed day, through close-ups and candid moments, afford the viewer a unique glimpse into the cooperative and egalitarian nature of a subsistence culture based on agriculture and hunting and fishing. Since Wounaan, social life has recently been severely disrupted by capitalist violence, the film captures a critical historical moment.

Come see EV transformed into a floor to ceiling salon of Arthur’s incredible photographs and collages! Writes Kroll, “Proof of Arthur’s intense obsession for women’s hair is in the hours of 8mm Kodachrome home movies he made of unsuspecting young women milling about Washington Square Park and the beach at Coney Island. Or the hours and hours he spent cutting up and preserving newspaper, magazine and comic images of damsels with long hair or his extensive collection of rare 1950s “Stan’s Photos” of women with hair down to the ground!”
