Kate McCabe will be showcasing a decade’s worth of her moving image work combining humor in experimental film and premiering her latest 16mm work, You and I Remain. A film inspired by the Anthropocene, You and I Remain is an apocalyptic lullaby, a landscape film mediating on the end of the world. Shot in Big Sur, the Salton Sea and in McCabe’s own neighborhood of Joshua Tree, the film shows us a portrait of the world askew with subtle and moving sound design by Jason Payne of Nitzer Ebb. Local fave, Gabriela Molina begins the evening with a selection of her recent fantastical cut-out animations and light experiments!

The oldest surviving animated feature film and based upon based on the ancient stories “The Arabian Nights.” The Ådventures of Prince Åchmed is a 1926 German animated fairytale feature film by Lotte Reiniger. A handsome prince with a flying horse befriends a witch, meets Aladdin, and battles demons to win a princess. The film features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented; the technique she used for the camera is similar to Wayang shadow puppets, though hers were animated frame by frame, not manipulated in live action. Micheal Henderson, Margaret McClelland, Stefanos Kokranis, Jillian LaCrux, and Kyle Bert join Scott Kerr in accompanying this marvelous film!

Probing into the deep psyche of music, fame and film this evening poses two exceptional in-person artist’s forays and genius spins on the infinite iterations of Rock & Roll. Jess Holzworth is a visual artist & video maker who employs her hyper-collage aesthetic to the making of stunning music videos for bands ranging from Beck, Black Bananas, M.I.A., and Deep Valley. These and more of Holzworth’s videos will be screened tonight. Second half of the show features meticulous historian Clif Taylor/Chick Cashman, dragged through the ashes of glam hell, in live discussion on the essence of rock and roll presenting a cosmological montage and performance manifesto, preaching + playing cosmic cowboy bullshit all while weaving a web between Cassavetes’ Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Bewitched and high heels ad infinitum!

An evening of art-pop music and darkly twisted visions, featuring Czech pop pranksters DVA, Tucson’s freaky fun disco-funksters Shooda Shook It, and uncanny animation. DVA an energetic two-piece duo specializing in a warped pop mishmash that incorporates outré instrumentation, plenty of studio effects, and lyrics culled from their own made-up language. DVA is also known for their animated music films and tonight we will screen some phantasmagorical classics of stop-motion animation from Jan Švankmajer and the Brothers Quay.

ANAGRAM COLLECTIVE–an artist collective formed by painters Arthur Johnstone and Nate Carlson, animator Auden Lincoln-Vogel and poet/musician Annelyse Gelman–is returning to Tucson from their summer residency in rural New Mexico.

Join us for a drinks-and-art party at EXPLODED VIEW on August 6, featuring paintings and works on paper – landscapes, portraits, the illustrated Invisible Cities of Italo Calvino – a performance of brand-new songs, and the unveiling of our hand-painted animation, “Gila”.

3 Filmmakers in person!

The second part of our series investigating new work from regional hotbeds of experimental media. The artists write, “With a handmade mix of animation and live action on video, super 8, 16mm and 35mm slides we’re covering all the bases for an eclectic hour and 20 minutes.  The films tend toward an ethereal conjuring of spirits with a dystopian punk attitude.” Filmmakers Alee Peoples, Cosmo Serguson & Abby Banks will be here in person to present this unusual assortment of new work!
